Neighborhood Development

What makes a great neighborhood? There are certain assets that contribute to high quality of life. They include affordable housing, safety, nearby parks and public amenities, ample green space, good schools, close by shopping, and friendly neighbors.

When we put together a comprehensive plan for turning around troubled neighborhoods, we keep these qualities in mind. Through our decades of experience, we have become more convinced than ever that for neighborhood revitalization to be successful, it takes more than “bricks and mortar.” To achieve what everyone wants to see in a “great neighborhood” our strategies need to address comprehensively the physical, economic, social and civic aspects of a healthy neighborhood.

Typical strategies employed in our neighborhood revitalization work include:

• Removal of Slum and Blight
• Land Assembly for strategic development of new housing or commercial enterprises.
• Working with our housing staff to develop unique programs to encourage homeownership and improvement in our redevelopment area.
• Promoting neighborhood safety and stability through community policing and resident engagement.
• Working with our economic development staff to create programs for small neighborhood businesses which often border our redevelopment areas.
